Get rid of carpeting and avoid using rugs. Carpet is nearly impossible to completely clean, and the fibers hold onto dust, mites, dander, pollen and other substances that are quite irritating to allergy sufferers. Instead, use flooring such as tile or hardwood that can be easily mopped.

Drugstore shelves are packed with dozens of allergy medications and antihistamines, but no product provides relief in every single allergy sufferer. Ask your doctor for a sample pack or purchase the smallest package size available. This will give you an idea of whether or not the product will work for you. If it doesn’t, you have not invested a lot of money.

Consider going without carpet. Carpet is well known for being a host for pollen, dust, and dust mites. If your carpeting is wall-to-wall, replace it with wood, tile or laminate floors if you can afford it. This will reduce the amount of allergens in your home. If this isn’t possible, vacuum daily.

When you choose pillows, be sure to choose a synthetic material because many natural materials (especially feathers) can cause allergies. Dust mites do not prefer these types of pillows, as their preference is the natural material pillows. It is important to get allergy covers for the pillows, and launder both the covers and pillows often.

Don’t open your windows when pollen is prevalent in the air. Everyone wants to have the fresh Spring breeze air out their home, but the air has more pollen at certain times of day. The hours between 10 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon are usually the riskiest. In the late afternoon, you can allow your house to air with the windows open.

For a touch of clean, sun-kissed fragrance on your clothes and linens, your best bet is to use lightly scented dryer sheets, fabric softener or laundry detergent. Hanging your clothes to dry outdoors may add a sun-kissed scent. It may also cause pollen to collect on them. Consider using a natural laundry detergent for a fresh scent instead, but make sure the detergent doesn’t contain ingredients that you are allergic to.

When you are ready to go on vacation, you may try to hurry and pick a vacation spot. Unfortunately, it’s best to be picky when planning your trip–especially if you are allergy-prone. Before choosing a destination, do your homework to find information about weather conditions, pollen counts and other potential allergy triggers.

Instead of accepting the irritating and uncomfortable symptoms of your allergies, learn how to treat them.
